Zanesville Catholic schools have embraced Bishop Earl Fernandes’ challenge “to accept the responsibility of supporting mothers and their children, and to fight for the right to life for every human, born and unborn.”
In an effort to support life in all of its stages, the school community has organized service projects that promote human dignity, affirm life from the moment of conception to natural death and allow students to put the Corporal Works of Mercy to practical use.
This fall, a newly formed Bishop Rosecrans Students for Life group took the lead on a collection drive for baby items that was formerly sponsored by Campus Ministries.
More than 1,500 diapers were collected from Oct. 28 to Nov. 22. Over 40 onesies were collected by the fifth grade and the staff donated 19 baby blankets. Other items included wipes, cups, and lotions that will be delivered by students at a future date when they will also tour the Heartbeats pregnancy center in Zanesville.
At the conclusion of the donation period, Michele Slater and Staci Mohler, fifth grade teachers at Bishop Fenwick School, were interviewed by WHIZ-TV.
Future activities for the Bishop Rosecrans Students for Life include participating in the March in Life in January in Washington, D.C., sponsoring the Third Annual Rice Bowl Challenge during Lent and collecting items for Mary’s House in Stockport in May.
