Bishop Gilbert I. Sheldon
Funeral Mass for Bishop Gilbert I. Sheldon, 96, the third bishop of the Diocese of Steubenville, who died Monday, April 24, was celebrated Tuesday, May 2 at Steubenville Holy Rosary Church.
“Bishop Sheldon personified a shepherd’s generosity and compassionate heart. His love for the people of God was evident in his travels throughout the diocese as he shared the good news of Jesus Christ. As his episcopal motto illustrated, he was strong in the faith,” said Bishop Jeffrey Monforton, the current bishop of Steubenville.
Bishop Sheldon served as bishop of Steubenville from April 2, 1992 until his retirement in 2002, after he had reached the mandatory retirement age for bishops of 75. He succeeded Bishop Albert Ottenweller, who retired in 1992, also for age reasons.
He was born on Sept. 20, 1926 in Cleveland, one of 12 children of Ignatius and Stephanie (Olszewski) Sheldon.
He received his early education in Cleveland and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps after graduation from high school in 1944. He went on to receive degrees from John Carroll University and St. Mary Seminary, both in Cleveland, and the Ohio Consortium of Seminaries in Columbus. In addition, he has been awarded honorary degrees from Wheeling Jesuit University and Franciscan University of Steubenville.
He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Cleveland on Feb. 28, 1953 by Archbishop Edward Hoban. On June 11, 1976, he was ordained an auxiliary bishop of Cleveland by Bishop (later Cardinal) James Hickey.
While bishop of Steubenville, he served on the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ committees for Latin America, Administration, National Advisory Council, Missions and Nominations, and as a board member of the Pontifical College Josephinum.
