Betty Lou Berg

Funeral Mass for Betty Lou Berg, 82, who died Sunday, Feb. 12, was celebrated Monday, Feb. 20 at Powell St. Joan of Arc Church. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery, Lewis Center.

She was born on March 23, 1940, in Ashland, New York to Elwood and Alice Brando, and grew up on her father’s dairy farm. She graduated from Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore in 1960, earned a Bachelor of Social Science degree in public policy from Pennsylvania State University in 1985 and did postgraduate studies at DeSales University in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

During her nursing career, she served in several states, including Maryland, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Elwood.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Deacon Thomas Berg Sr.; sons, Deacon Thomas Berg Jr. (Donna), Michael (Kimberley), Peter (Kelly) and Stephen (Kimberly); daughter, Anne (Edward) Smith; sister, Patricia (Roger) Swanson; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Marine Corps Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Dennis M. McCarthy

Funeral Mass for U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. (Retired) Dennis M. McCarthy, 78, who died Wednesday, Feb. 8, was celebrated Friday, Feb. 24 in the chapel of Columbus St. Charles Preparatory School. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in the spring.

He was born in Cleveland on Feb. 1, 1945 and was a graduate of Cleveland St. Ignatius High School. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps upon graduation from the University of Dayton. Following additional training, he became a platoon commander in Vietnam. He remained on active duty until 1978, when he came to Columbus, where he opened a law practice and was in the Marine Corps Reserve until 1999, being promoted to the rank of brigadier general in 1992.

He returned to active duty in 1999 and was promoted to lieutenant general in 2001. From then until his retirement in 2005, he was commander of the Marine Corps Reserve, leading the largest mobilization in its history.

From 2005 to 2009, he was executive director of the Reserve Officers Association of the United States. He completed his service to the nation by being appointed assistant secretary of defense by President Barack Obama in 2009. He left that position in 2011 and returned to his law practice.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary (Bednorz); sons Sean (Theresa) and Col. Michael (Dr. Britt), and six grandchildren.

Jeffrey J. Swartz

Funeral Mass for Jeffrey J. Swartz, 70, who died Tuesday, Jan. 31, was celebrated Monday, Feb. 6 at Columbus St. Matthias Church. Burial was at Union Cemetery, Columbus.

He was born on March 17, 1952, was a graduate of Columbus Bishop Watterson High School and attended Ohio Dominican College (now University), Franklin University and Columbus State Community College. He also graduated from a professional umpire school in Florida.

He served as director of the Diocesan Recreation Association from 1975 to 1978 and was an umpire for the Ohio High School Athletic Association for 33 years. He was secretary of the Central Ohio Umpires Association for several years in the late 1970s and 1980s. Most recently, he was a basketball coach at Columbus St. Matthias Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Survivors include his wife, Sandra; son, Jeffrey II; daughters, Melissa and Molly; brothers, Steve, John (Donna) and Andy (Margaret); sisters, Ellen (Tom) Weilbacher, Peggy, Connie and Julie (Scott) McDonald; and six grandchildren.
