Angelina Ferguson, a graduating senior at Columbus Bishop Watterson High School, is the recipient of the annual T.J. Baesmann scholarship administered by The Catholic Foundation.
The $2,000 college scholarship is awarded to one Columbus diocesan high school senior each year on the basis of financial need, academic excellence and participation in school activities. The scholarship fund was established in 2007 by Mary Kelly, a retired diocesan teacher, and her husband, Sidney, in honor of their grandson.
Ferguson, who plans to major in biology, is a member of Columbus Our Lady of Peace Church. At Bishop Watterson, she was a Student Council member, student ambassador and leadership academy group leader, was part of Ohio State University’s Buckeye Student Leadership Academy and was a member of the school theater crew and the National Honor Society.
She did volunteer work for several organizations, including Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital, the YWCA, Mommies Matter, the Grace Clinic of Delaware, the Columbus Metropolitan Library, the Columbus St. Catharine of Siena Church Vacation Bible School and the Esperanza Para and Hogar Maurina Orfanato organizations, which raise money for impoverished children in Guatemala.
In her parish, she was a cantor and altar server. She also was a referee for the Westerville Amateur Soccer Association.
